There has been a recent trend on the internet, especially on social media platforms like YouTube with insurmountable videos dedicated to showing people how to get a slimmer looking nose without going under a knife as society still view plastic surgery as a taboo even though the rate of people visiting the surgeon’s office and using photo altering app has more than doubled within the past few years!
It’s almost as if every woman thinks she’d look prettier if her nose was thinner, when in reality that is not always the case.
Today, I saw a video recommendation on my YouTube feed with this thumbnail
This was not the first time that I had seen a video like this, in fact, I had religiously followed the guideline of another similar video which only succeeded in creating the right amount doubt needed for me to question this internet fad.
I had genuinely thought that since his name had a “DR.” in front of it then what he was suggesting would be legit. It only took me one week to figure out how stupid it all was!
Does nose slimming exercise work? Fact or fad.
Granted, the nose is, in fact, one of the most plastic parts of our body, with plastic meaning easily malleable as there are no complex nerves surrounding that region, neither are their solid bones there, you’d only find cartilages, I.e, soft bones (or biscuit bones as my younger self would have called it!)
This is why Rhinoplasty or nose jobs are the easiest procedures to perform and is referred to as a minimally invasive procedure.
The primary problem those so-called “nose slimming exercises” focuses on is the reduction of the alar base. The idea is to work the muscles around that area to constrict and tighten it up just like how you would if you are working on your abs to create some kind of muscular corset to give you a smaller looking midsection. So consequently, working the muscles around that area would give you the appearance of a slimmer looking nose. Seems logical right?
But there is just one tinsy tiny bit of problem that just so happens to be a major one,
There are no muscles significantly large enough in that area that you can work with to create an otherwise slim nose!
So if there are no muscles there, what in God’s bloody name are you working out?!🤷♀️
Even if I should try to give the fad idea of exercising the nose thin the benefits of the doubt and say it does work somehow, in order to be able to maintain the result, you would have to keep “working out” indefinitely as muscles atrophy (shrinks) with lack of use.
I personally do not have such dedication on my part!
The Human muscles evolved over thousands of years based on survival needs; we developed strong explosive leg muscles to help us outrun the predators, arm muscles to help us carry things, the abs to give us balance and strength when we climb, and so on.
Nasal muscles? Perhaps to help us sniff out our foods better 🤷♀️
